What's it all about?
Australian women make up half the voters and less than a quarter of the federal politicians. No wonder women’s concerns and needs are largely ignored by the Government.
What is a woman’s role in politics? Could a woman with children become PM? Hey, we can do 5 things at once and we don’t have a driver, umpteen personal staff or thousands of public servants. You bet we could!
But first women must tell the major parties what we think, need and WANT. This is why a Mum of seven, Justine Caines, has formed What Women Want (Australia).
In August 2007, we became a registered political party and are committed to putting the issues of importance to Australian women on the political agenda. We are running Senate candidates across the country and in for the House of Representative candidates in key marginal seats.
Why? Because after 10 years of working with both the Government and the Opposition, Justine has found that nothing changes unless politicians believe they could lose (or gain) votes! So, working together as women, for the sake of our children, ourselves and our planet, it is time for us to ACT.
What do Women Want? Mostly, it is what they need. Women need a fair workplace, paid maternity leave, access to quality affordable childcare, support as carers, choices in childbirth and much better post-natal care, affordable housing. Women want a strong education system. Including access to universities based on merit rather than money. Women want a future for their children, a sustainable environment, appropriate care and security in their senior years. Women want policies to reverse climate change and to address the water crisis.
Does this sound like a wish list? Is it all too hard? We don’t think so. What Women Want will pressure both the major parties to make their policies REAL. Enough talk ! Women of Australia and their families need ACTION.
